They were just bruises.

Or so Evan MacNeil’s doctor thought when he examined the purplish marks on the young boy’s legs last fall.

After all, bruises were just a rite of passage of an active nine-year-old boy. They were nothing a gentle scolding from Evan’s parents, Tim and Nicole, to be more careful couldn’t cure.

Still, the fact that the marks appeared only below their son’s knees didn’t sit well with the couple, who work for the Niagara Health System. Tim and Nicole’s concern became downright alarm when they discovered a ring of pinprick-like bruises, called petechia, on Evan’s neck less than a month later.
